A confrontation between the Defence and Security Forces and insurgents in Awasse, Mocímboa da Praia, approximately three months ago, left the districts of Mocímboa da Praia and Palma without electricity.
Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) had indications that the fault was at the Awasse substation, and a team of EDM technicians was sent to address the problem. En route, however, the team encountered insurgents, which made it impossible for them to continue, and they retreated.
A second team was accompanied by a military unit, and Pinnacle News has established that a fierce confrontation led the abandoning of several EDM vehicle.
After three months without electricity, the former combatants of the National Liberation Struggle set Sunday (18-10) as zero hour for solving the problem.
The strategy consisted of first relieving the road between Mueda and Mocimboa da Praia, via the Awasse crossing, in order to get the EDM team to the substation.
Along the way, the assault force encountered insurgents controlling that section of road, and we have just been told that the insurgents retreated in disarray in the face of the former combatants’ offensive.
And so, the problem was solved successfully, leaving Mocimboa da Praia and Palma bright once again and able to communicate with the rest of the world. Constraints such as lack of drinking water due to pumps falling inactive and the haphazard charging of cell phones using solar panels were addressed in these northern districts.
It is to be noted that there was a previous dispute between former combatants and military personnel regarding the accomplishment of the mission, because the “formers” flatly refused to go into battle with the military, insisting on operating exclusively on their own.
