Mozambique: Internal debt rises 26% until September
O País / Narciso de Matos
The newspaper O Pais marked its eleventh birthday on May 28 by promoting a conference on “Qualification, Employment and Entrepreneurship” to discuss the links between education and the labour market.
The main conference speaker was the former dean of Eduardo Mondlane University, Narciso de Matos, who pointed up a paradox in the economic growth base of the country: that economic growth in Mozambique does not necessarily imply that more Mozambicans have jobs. The economy can grow without more people being employed.
Moreover, De Matos revealed that the better-education people were, the less likely it was for them to find work in Mozambique.
The solution therefore centres on agriculture, small and medium enterprise development and special attention to youth.
“It is imperative to transform and modernize agriculture so it is more productive, is a better employer and generates better quality of life. Knowledge in general and the development of human capital are the central pillars of sustainable economic development, of inclusion, lifting the living standards of people and generating welfare.
”It is imperative to create a more satisfactory working environment in the private sector, with special attention to SMEs. We must give grants to industries employing the largest number of people for the investment they are making in them,” Narciso de Matos said.
