Mozambique: EDM wants to ensure power supply in anticipation of industrial production needs
Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) is developing a master plan for production, transportation, and distribution as a means of expanding its services to all parts of the country.
According to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, Alfredo Nampete, quoted in Saturday’s edition of Noticias, the 2016 document recommends diversification of the current electric production matrix, as a way of responding to the expected growth in demand over the coming years.
“Our great challenge is ensuring reliability in access to quality energy, requiring EDM to draw up a master plan for the production, transportation and distribution structure,” he said.
In fact, the northern region consumes energy generated in the central province of Tete, which reduces the quality and reliability of energy Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado provinces.
In the search for a sustainable solution, the master plan focuses on the energy generation as well as production, transportation and distribution.
According to EDM Planning Director António Gimo Júnior, who coordinates the plan development team, one of the biggest challenges is mobilizing capacity for the installation of generation infrastructure in the north of the country.
Current transport corridors are obsolete, and unable to transmit electrical current in volume and quality, Gimo said.
At present, Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado get power from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric dam in Tete through power lines more than 1,000 kilometres long, greatly reducing quality and reliability.
