Durban mayor and colleagues sacked

South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) has sacked the mayor of one of its key municipalities – eThekwini (Durban) in KwaZulu-Natal – amid corruption, fraud and racketeering allegations.

Zandile Gumede, along with the entire eThekwini executive, were removed from their positions following a special provincial executive committee meeting, according to the ANC in that province.

Leaving the meeting, Ms Gumede refused to comment on its outcome. It is not clear at this stage if she will be contesting her party’s decision.

But securing a job is the least of Ms Gumede’s worries. She has a pending corruption case to contend with, having been arrested earlier this year on charges relating to the award of a government contract worth 208m rand ($14m, £11m).

The former mayor’s arrest led to protests by supporters who claim she is being targeted by a faction within the party.

Ms Gumede has denied any wrongdoing and is currently out bail on bail. Her corruption case is due back in court in January next year.
