In the week 23 and 29 April, 28 people died and 49 were injured, including 22 seriously, in 36 road accidents on Mozambique’s roads. The following week 30 April to 6 May, 29 people died and 102 were injured, 45 of them seriously, in 37 accidents.
Compared to the same period last year, the number of deaths fell by 10 cases, though victims with various injuries increased by 32, from 70 to 102.
Driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding remain the major causes of road accidents, lending weight to the thesis that human error is chiefly to blame, with the awareness campaigns and more punitive measures having little or no effect.
Data provided to the press by the General Command of Police of the Republic of Mozambique on Tuesday indicates that of the 37 road accidents, at least 15 involved people being run over, 10 driving too fast and six driving while drunk.
In the week just ended, the Traffic Police inspected 44,287 cars on the country’s roads, seized for irregularities, and imposed 7,040 fines. Meanwhile, 263 drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated and 11 for driving illegally.
The PRM concluded its statistical report with an appeal to all road users to observe road safety measures and obey traffic rules in order to prevent road accidents.
