Five people died of drowning and crocodile attacks in central Mozambique over this past weekend following floods in the region, authorities have announced.
The deaths were recorded in the districts of Quelimane, Namacurra and Derre, according to Zambézia provincial police command, which did not provide further details, damage assessment still being underway.
Between 11 and 19 March, northern and central parts of Mozambique experienced heavy rains caused by Cyclone Gombe and the tropical depression that followed it.
In addition to the five deaths in Zambézia just announced, the bad weather has already taken 59 lives and injured 82 people, mainly in the northern province of Nampula, in many cases following the collapse of mud-and-thatch houses.
Mozambique is routinely battered by severe storms during the cyclone/rainy season, which runs from October to April.
