Tropical Storm Jude: 33 transit centres closed in Nampula province
While northern Mozambique experiences flooding, the drought in southern Mozambique is forcing authorities to consider restricting the water supply in Maputo province.
The matter will be discussed in a March meeting between water industry representatives and the main users of the Umbeluzi River water from the Pequenos Lebombos dam.
Pequenos Lebombos provides water to the cities of Maputo and Matola and the town of Boane, and the Umbeluzi river, although not dry, is registering extremely low flow rates.
Water shortages have even forced authorities to suspend electricity generation, Rute Namucho from the National Directorate of Water Resources Management says, adding that the water left in the Corumana reservoir will not even last until the next rainy season.
In southern Mozambique, there are three large dams – two in Maputo province and one in Gaza. Namucho said it was important to note that restrictions will not be introduced abruptly and that users will be given adequate warning.
