Mozambique: President receives World Peace Day message from Pope Francis

On December 24, 2015, more than 1,000 prisoners were pardoned by President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi from various prisons across the country. But two, released from a penitentiary in Maputo province by the president’s Christmas Eve goodwill gesture, are again breathing prison cell air.
The pair were caught red-handed stealing appliances in Maputo’s Zimpeto neighbourhood, justifying their criminal lifestyle with the lack of anything to eat. One said that after seven years in jail he went to see his wife and two children and committed the crime because she was hungry.
The Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Abdul Remane Lino de Almeida, urged all those pardoned in the amnesty to maintain high standards behaviour and not disappoint the president, but these two at least have apparently ignored his plea.
