The informal vendors ejected from downtown Maputo [Baixa] received a slip [‘guia’] to occupy stalls in various municipal markets, but many refused to do so.
The municipality gives informal vendors who have received the ‘guias’ a period of 15 days to present themselves at the markets indicated and occupy stalls there.
Of the informal vendors evicted from downtown Maputo, 2068 received such a ‘guia’, but of these, 1647 – more than half – failed to show up.
Many of those who did come forward have since abandoned the stalls. The Mercado do Povo. located precisely in downtown Maputo received close to 40 of the [ 2068] vendors, but only two remain.
There is no lack of justifications. Accustomed to plying their trade on the streets and avenues of the city, they did not adapt easily to closed markets with their controlled gates.
Those who prefer the formal markets know well the dangers of the streets, and many street vendors have reportedly received a good reception from those accustomed to selling inside the markets.
The action is part of the Municipal Development Plan, which includes the organisation of the informal sector.
