Cases of domestic violence in Mozambique increased 71 percent in 2018, with around 33,000 victims reported, Health Minister Nazira Abdula has said.
Presenting the Plan of Action and Response against Gender-Based Violence 2019-2022, the minister said the numbers were cause for concern and warned that “despite progress in the social awareness of the need to report and fight [domestic violence], many victims still do not report the mistreatment to which they have been subjected”.
Abdula also noted that “economic dependence of the victim on the perpetrator is one of the main factors inhibiting complaints”.
As elsewhere, most perpetrators of domestic violence in Mozambique are people close to the victims, including partners.
