Governor of Sofala Maria Helena Taipo has urged Mozambicans to continue to work for peace and national reconciliation as a way of honouring the achievements of Archbishop Emeritus of Beira, Dom Jaime Gonçalves, who died after a long illness in the early hours of Wednesday at the age of 79.
Through the Inter-Regional Association of Catholic Bishops of Southern Africa, of which he was president from 1984 to 1991, Archbishop Jaime Gonçalves contributed to the peace process in many other countries in the region, including South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
According Sofala governor Helena Taipo, the death of the archbishop represents the loss a man who never tired of spreading moral values through the building of the Catholic church in Mozambique.
In his own message of condolence, Beira mayor Daviz Simango said that Gonçalves’ death should prompt reflection on the restoration of lasting peace in the country.
Dom Jaime Gonçalves was ordained Archbishop of Beira in 1976 and played various roles during his episcopal career, including the presidency of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique and chancellorship of the Catholic University.
