The Council of Ministers yesterday considered and approved the dismissal of Manuel de Araújo from the position of President of the Municipal Council of the City of Quelimane. The dismissal bars him from the electoral race next 10 of October, O País reports.
Araujo has 20 days to appeal against the government decision to the Administrative Tribunal.
Under the current legislation, the chairperson of the Municipal Assembly should become interim mayor until whoever wins the October election is sworn in as the new mayor of Quelimane.

According to the executive, the decision on Araújo’s loss of mandate is based on paragraph 2 of article 10 of Law no. 7/79 of May 31 – the Law on Administrative Protection of the State on Local Authorities, which states: “Heads of local authority bodies who, after the elections, join a different party or join a list other than the one in which they presented themselves in the vote lose their mandate.”
The Municipal Assembly of Quelimane approved, the resolution on the loss of mandate of Manuel de Araujo by consensus on Wednesday last week, alleging that he had come into conflict with the law by joining Renamo.
