A group of physically disabled persons now gathers on a regular basis outside the Maputo City Municipal Council building seeking alternative livelihoods following the recent municipal approval of measures banning begging.
They gathered on Monday for the fourth time but failed to talk to the mayor, David Simango, from whom they expect answers.
“We want to know how we will survive. We have families and children to care for, but no one wants to employ us because we are disabled and we do not have access to scholarships for our children,” they argue.
The group promises to continue gathering until their demands are met.
The municipal measure is intended to discourage begging in the street and encourage the channeling of support to charity sites, allowing greater efficiency and control over support for the most needy.
The new regulation also bans the giving to beggars of any kind of support at the doors of shops, hotels, catering establishments, places of worship and elsewhere.
