Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan, current Director of the European Union’s Military Planning and Conduct Capability, concludes today, April 23, a two-day visit to Mozambique, where he had the opportunity to observe activities being carried out by the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) and take part in meetings with various entities, namely with the Chief of the General Staff of the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM), General Júlio dos Santos Jane.
At the end of his visit to Mozambique, Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan expressed that he felt “very pleased with the way cooperation between the FADM and EUMAM MOZ is progressing, also noting full collaboration with local authorities. Over these two days, “I had the opportunity to speak with various members of the FADM who highlighted the importance of the partnership and the work being carried out.”
The European Union Training Mission in Mozambique, currently commanded by Brigadier General Luís Barroso, is a non-executive mission, scheduled to conclude in June 2026, with activities carried out in coordination with Mozambican authorities. Currently, the mission is composed of around 83 military and civilian personnel from 10 European Union member states — Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, and Spain — as well as one non-member state, Serbia.
