The Chinese company Star Times Group yesterday announced that it will spend US$30 million accelerating the migration from analog to digital broadcasting in Mozambique in the hope of meeting the 31 December deadline.
The remainder of the total funding, an amount of about US$156 million is currently being evaluated by the Exim Bank of China, with Star Times, the group responsible for implementing the project in Mozambique, approving the US$30 million advance to get the process underway.
The announcement was made by the Mozambican Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, upon his arrival to visiting Japan and the People’s Republic of China.
“In the business meetings we had with the Chairman of the Exim Bank of China and the managers of the Star Times Goup, we reiterated the commitment of the Mozambican government to implementing the digital migration process within the set deadlines. The Exim Bank of China has assured us it will speed up the funding evaluation and in the meantime, Star Times Goup will make disbursements to start the process. As we speak, the company’s technicians are already in Mozambique revitalising the process,” the minister said on his return from China.
Mozambique is hoping to meet a December 31 2016 SADC digital migration deadline following the passing of the June 2015 deadline set by the International Telecommunication Union.
While the Exim Bank of China finalizes its evaluation, Star Times is implementing a pilot project consisting of 18 digital television transmitters, 10 in the provincial capitals and 8 in border areas.
