Renamo president Afonso Dhlakama has held a telephone conference with top members of his party in Maputo to assess the impact of the murder of Jeremias Pondeca Munguambe on the Costa do Sol beach last Saturday morning, and has said that the murder will not stop the ongoing Joint Commission talks.
Jeremias Pondeca Munguambe was a senior member of Renamo, head of the Department of Rural Administration and Local Government, a member of the Council of State, elected by the National Assembly on behalf of the Renamo party and a member of the Joint Commission in the Mozambique peace negotiations.
Renamo spokesman Antonio Muchanga said that the murder was committed by enemies of democracy and of the welfare of the people of Mozambique, and was aimed at forcing Renamo to abandon the dialogue, to the detriment of the people, but that all conflicts eventually end at the negotiating table.
“This wave of killings, it is hard to see how acts of this kind were committed in the capital, during the day, on the road, against a member of the State Council and the Joint Commission, who had been devoting his energy and ability to pacification of the country,” Muchanga said.
According to Renamo, the murder of Jeremias Pondeca is reason enough to declare that Mozambicans have been left to their fate.
“Pondeca was killed on Saturday morning, October 8, 2016, by people who fired guns at him. He was hit on the head when he was going for a walk on the beach at Costa do Sol,” Muchanga said.
He added that Pondeca’s body was removed around 7:30 AM and logged in at Maputo Central Hospital morgue as an “unknown person”.
Renamo has announced that, as a State Council member, the funeral of Jeremias Pondeca Munguambe will begin with a wake at 10:00 AM on Wednesday 12 October in the City Hall, and his funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM, in the village of Ndolene in Chidenguele, his birth-place.
Renamo conveys to the Pondeca family the condolences of the Renamo president, its National Political Committee, Secretariat and all Renamo members and supporters.
The party simultaneously demands speedy identification of the culprits and clarification of their motivation.
