Mozambique: Chapo calls for lasting peace to attract investment and develop the country - Watch
Voa / On the eve of the 25th anniversary of Mozambique’s 1992 peace agreement, the Renamo leader again demanded the placing of his men in the country’s armed forces
On Wednesday, Mozambique marked the 25th anniversary of the country’s General Peace Agreement, with Afonso Dhlakama declaring that on the Renamo side there would not be any shooting done.
In celebrations of the signing in Rome of the agreement that put an end to 16 years of armed conflict in Mozambique, the expectation is that the country will never return to a war.
“Peace has come to stay. This is my message to Mozambicans, to reassure them that on the Renamo side there will not be any weapons fired,” Dhlakama said.
But Dhlakama did demand an agreement on the placing of his combatants in the Defense Forces of Mozambique (FADM), or the country would have two armies, one the state’s and the other Renamo’s.
Analyst Adelson Rafael says he does not believe this [the country to have two armies, one the state’s and the other Renamo’s] can happen, given the current level of rapprochement between the Renamo leader and the head of state, Filipe Nyusi.
According to Rafael, “what the Renamo leader wants is that his men be incorporated into the Defence Forces of Mozambique in the light of the General Peace Agreement”.
