Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama said yesterday that the armed men who recently destabilised Mocímboa da Praia were acting on the orders of wealthy compatriots who wished to perpetuate corruption.
Dhlakama was speaking to the Stv news channel via telephone from the Gorongosa mountain range where he was meeting with fellow Renamo members to commemorate the death 38 years ago of the first commander in chief of Renamo, André Matsangaisse.
Dhlakama said that the attack’s backers intended to sow division among Mozambicans so they could continue to plunder the country’s riches.
The Renamo leader said he had evidence that when the leaders of the armed men who had destabilised Mocímboa entered the region in 2014 they recruited young men who professed the Muslim religion and instructed them to ignore the Constitution of the Republic and to respect only Islamic law.
For Dhlakama, the solution was to keep the dialogue between the government and Renamo on track.
