South Africa, Mozambique to bolster security measures at border
Folha de Maputo / Afonso Dhlakama during his meeting with the press, on Thursday, February 10 2016.
The leader of the opposition party Renamo (Mozambique National Resistance) Afonso Dhlakama, said that he has lost total confidence in the Government of Mozambique and is only available for possible negotiations on behalf of the future of democracy in the country. Dhlakama spoke to the press in person for the first time since he had last been seen in public on October 9 2015.
Speaking to a group of journalists, including Lusa, in a Renamo military base in the foothills of Gorongosa in central Mozambique, Dhlakama said that recent incidents with his convoy, the invasion of the Mozambican police to his home in Beira and reports of abductions and killings perpetrated against members of his party affect his availability for dialogue.
“After what happened on 12 and 25 September [incidents with his convoy in Manica province], there is no trust. One thing is to attack the base, but to attack my car on the move, any human being, even ifite had happened with the pope, would question the security and trust for dialogue,” he said.
