President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, promised today that “peace-building” would continue with Renamo’s new leadership.
The head of state was speaking today at ceremonies for the deceased president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Afonso Dhlakama, in front of the railway station in the city of Beira.
Nyusi dubbed Dhlakama a figure who had written “indelible pages” in the history of Mozambique, and said that his death should not be a “setback” in the agreements that were being reached.
Earlier, in a family message, Ivone Soares, Renamo’s parliamentary leader and Dhlakama’s niece, said that the former guerrilla had been elected President of the Republic in the first multiparty elections in 1994, rather than Frelimo’s Joaquim Chissano – an allusion to the electoral fraud alleged by Renamo.
Ivones Soares reaffirmed an idea left with journalists on Saturday: “Do not be cowed, be Dhlakama,” in an intervention that would turn out to be the most applauded of the morning.
Afonso Dhlakama agreed a cease-fire in hostilities in the centre of the country between Renamo’s armed wing and the Mozambican armed forces with President Nyusi in late 2016.
The two started direct talks which took the head of state more than once to the Renamo president’s hideout in the Gorongosa mountains.
Afonso Dhlakama will be buried on Thursday in his hometown of Mangunde, about 300 kilometres southwest of Beira.
The Mozambican government announced on Friday that the Renamo president would receive an official funeral as is the right of an opposition leader.
Dhlakama died on Thursday in Gorongosa Mountain, following health complications.
