The public funeral ceremonies of Afonso Dhlakama, president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) will take place in the square in front Beira railway station, a Renamo spokesman has told Lusa.
The decision was taken jointly by a government delegation, the deceased’s relatives and Renamo officials yesterday, and the CFM square was announced instead of the Ferroviário da Beira sports stadium, which was the place announced by Dhlakama’s family and Renamo party last Saturday.
The public will be able to access the square from “the early hours of the morning” for a ceremony scheduled to begin at 08:00 a.m. and run until 12:00 p.m., Renamo spokesman José Manteigas said.
Afterwards, the body of the Mozambican opposition leader will be transported to his hometown of Mangunde, about 300 kilometres southwest of the city of Beira in Chibabava district, where he will be buried on Thursday at 2:00 p.m..
The party leader died after health complications on Thursday at 08:00 a.m. at the age of 65 in the Gorongosa mountains.
