Mozambique: Excluding Mondlane from post-election dialogue would be "a serious mistake"
O País
Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama has argued that, if there was separation of powers in the Mozambican state, kidnappings such as that of journalist Ericino de Salema would not happen, because there would be several forces fighting the same evil.
Dhlakama added that if institutions were functioning properly, the current crime wave would be abating because criminals would be successfully prosecuted by the police.
“We have the State Information Service, SISE, we have SERNIC, the Criminal Investigation Police, we have normal police – the PRM. We have several groups with weapons belonging to the state, to watch over and persecute politicians, but nobody persecutes those (kidnappers),” he said.
The Renamo leader was alluding to alleged ‘death squads’, and said that the alleged kidnappers belonged to the ruling party. He urged the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, to do something to bolster accountability.
“This is death squad activity. Those who are kidnapping and killing people are elements linked to the Frelimo party, or linked to the Frelimo government machine,” was Dhlakama’s diagnosis.
He said he was worried and aggrieved by the situation because, in addition to preventing people from expressing themselves freely, it tarnished the image of the country and its democratic credentials.
