Renamo has again proposed that its founder and historical leader Afonso Dhlakama be declared a national hero, a proposal that the opposition MDM party also welcomes. Frelimo, the party in power, says the matter should be dealt with by the Assembly of the Republic’s National Commission for Honorary Titles.
Various personalities linked to Renamo have received honours, but President Afonso Dhlakama in life always said that “the greatest honour that he could receive was to see his people enjoy the freedom to elect and be elected democratically” according to Magalhães, who added that Afonso Dhlakama’s name was written in the hearts of Mozambicans, and deserved recognition for his contribution to the establishment of the state of Mozambique.
The MDM has declared itself in favour, and Frelimo has said it will consider the proposal in parliament if Renamo submits it.
According to MDM spokesman Fernando Bismarque, “Afonso Dhlakama’s contribution to the achievement of democracy must be recognised, not least because, regardless of the means used, at least Afonso Dhlakama forced us to abandon the single party regime for a multiparty one.” “If Mozambique is experiencing a multiparty regime, albeit with some flaws, it is due to the struggle and engagement [of Dhlakama].”
Frelimo spokesman Caifadine Manasse referred the matter to the National Commission for Honorary Titles for analysis, promising that, should the proposal be submitted to parliament, it would be properly considered.
“There is a law and a commission that deals with these matters. As Renamo says it will submit a proposal to the Assembly of the Republic for consideration, we will assess it at the level of the Assembly of the Republic,” Manessa does
It is not known when Renamo intends to submit the proposal to the Assembly.
