Members of the Assembly of the Republic have expressed concern about the wave of kidnappings that continues to plague the city of Maputo, in particular.
The parliamentary members of the Commission on International Relations, Cooperation and Communities (CRICC) of the Assembly of the Republic conveyed their apprehension in a meeting with the Minister of the Interior on Monday.
Commission president Catarina Dimande told ‘O País’ that, when the concern was raised, Minister of the Interior Amade Miquidade promised better days ahead.
“We were told that everything is being done to put an end to these situations, and we are optimistic and hope that this will be resolved as soon as possible, bringing peace to the citizenry,” Dimande explained.
During the meeting with Minister Miquidader, the deputies shared the findings of work visits carried out to assess the situation at Mozambique’s borders. Parliamentarians say that on these visits, they saw considerable work being done by workers assigned to border posts in line with recommendations issued, for example, on the Covid-19 pandemic, but remained concerned about the scarcity of physical means for patrolling the borders.
They said, however, that they had received assurances from Minister Miquidader that the problem was already being addressed.
