Two days after André Oliveira Matsangaíssa spoke to the press in Maputo, the leader of the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta, Mariano Nhongo, has challenged the ideas voice by him.
Nhongo said the demobilisation of his men would only take place if the terms contained in the document that the Renamo Military Junta sent to the Government in October 2019 were followed.
In the course of a conference call from his unspecified location, Nhongo established the roadmap that the process should follow. For the dissident Renamo leader, first come “negotiations on integration”, followed by the “truce” and, only then, “cantonment, integration and demobilisation”.
Nhongo said he considered Oliveira Matsangaíssa“bait” to lure Renamo fighters into the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) process, adding that he had no doubt that André Oliveira Matsangaíssa was a traitor and that he was being used.
He highlighted that the nephew of Renamo founder André Matsangaíssa had no control over the process, even asserting that he had abandoned the Military Junta and joined the DDR in exchange for money.
“André doesn’t know anything. Even when we sent the document to the government, he did not keep abreast of [the process]. He doesn’t know anything,” Nhongo said.
Nhongo flatly ruled out the idea of amnesty. The priority, he said, was the start of the talks, and an amnesty only after agreement with the government.
“Amnesty comes after negotiation – after both parties reach an understanding. After the truce, we go to the cantonment. He starts with the truce! Truce of what? André is a traitor,” he said.
