Mozambican sailor Deizy Nhaquile ended her participation in the Olympic Games on Monday. The athlete completed 9 of the 10 scheduled races and, despite having made good starts, was unable to finish in the 10 best boats going through.
In her second participation in the Olympics, the Mozambican sailor came in 40th place, scoring 301 points after 9 races. She started the competition well, achieving good positions against her two opponents, but her elimination ends Mozambican participation in the Olympics.
The national delegation at the world’s largest sporting event was made up of seven athletes, three fewer than in Tokyo, when the country had the largest contingent since its debut in Moscow, Russia, in 1980.
In the rollcall of Mozambique’s participation, the performance of boxers Tiago Muxanga and Alcinda Panguana stands out, with a record of one victory each. This was the first time that Mozambique had won in this sport at the Olympic Games.
The two boxers were eliminated in the round of 16, falling to Mexican Marco Álavarez and Liu Yanga respectively, the latter being the world champion. At the last edition of the Olympics, Alcinda was eliminated by Chinese boxer Hong Go. Tiago Muxaga, who was participating in the games for the first time, was the first athlete to secure a victory for Mozambique.
The other Mozambican representatives, Matthew Lawrence and Denise Donelli in swimming, Jacira Ferreira in judo and Steven Sabino in athletics, failed to make it past the first round of the competition.
Sabino in fact didn’t compete, being disqualified for a false start. The athlete started the race before the signal, which precipitated a decision by the organization in light of the regulations governing world athletics.
24 years without medals
Mozambique has not won any medals at the Olympic Games since Maria de Lurdes Mutola won the 800 metres in 2000. The greatest Mozambican athlete of all time managed overcame strong opposition from Britisher Kelly Holmes in the final, securing the only medal – a gold – the country has ever won in the competition.
