Maputo Maritime Sports Club athlete Deisy Nhaquila won the African Sailing Championship in the Laser Radial class in Algeria on Saturday, beating competition from Egypt and Algeria to secure qualification for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
The athlete was pleased to have taken the African title and dedicated her success to the “Mozambican people”, saying “they were the ones who supported me all this time”. She also thanked the Sailing and Canoeing federation, her coach, family and friends “who have always supported me in my career and are always present at the best moments in my journey.”
The 19-year-old athlete takes the name of Mozambique into the next Olympic Games on her own merits, without having received an invitation – the first time an athlete from the Maputo Maritime Sports Club has secured a place. Nhaquila will represent the country in the Sailing and Canoeing category’s Laser Radial class.
Deisy Nhaquila has won several African Sailing Championships prizes already – in Angola and Egypt and now, Algeria.
