The death toll in the explosion of a fuel tanker in Moatize district, in the western Mozambican province of Tete has now reached 101, according to a TVM report on Thursday.
The explosion occurred on 17 November while a large crowd of people were trying to steal fuel from the tanker in the locality of Caphiridzange.
43 people died instantly, and two more on their way to hospital. Since then 56 people have died of their injuries in Tete provincial hospital, despite all efforts by medical staff to save their lives.
Meanwhile, the governor of Tete province, Paulo Auade, on a visit to Cahora Bassa district, has urged citizens to denounce criminal schemes such as the fuel theft at Caphiridzange, in order to avoid the loss of more lives.
“We have to be more vigilant and avoid joining in schemes concocted by individuals of doubtful behaviour”, Auade said. “Instead we should inform the authorities so that these people can be neutralised”.
The “individuals of doubtful behaviour” in the Caphiridzange tragedy were the two Malawian truck drivers involved who, instead of driving the fuel to Malawi, opted to rob their employers and sell the petrol to local Mozambicans known to trade in stolen fuel.
