With the reopening of the academic year seemingly on their doorstep, Mozambique’s public universities have scheduled a meeting to speed up the process for the first week of August.
The rector of the Pedagogical University of Maputo (UP Maputo), Jorge Ferrão, has however said that resuming classes in higher education “should not be an adventure, playing with people’s health”.
“It is necessary to observe all health security conditions. We [UP Maputo] are prepared, but we depend on the endorsement at a higher level [the lifting of restrictions by the Government],” he added.
Regarding UP Maputo in particular, the academic and former Minister of Education revealed that his institution would prioritise postgraduate students, those having to present their graduation theses, and those working on academic papers.
Jorge Ferrão was speaking at the presentation of the first batch of alcoholic hand-sanitiser gel produced by the chemical laboratory of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the Pedagogical University of Maputo.
Director of that establishment, Armindo Monjane, said that molasses and eucalyptus leaves had been used in the production of the gel.
The ceremony was also marked by the donation of laser infrared thermometers, donated by state-owned insurance company Emose, and alcoholic gel to the Munhuana Secondary School.
