A lack of funds for the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of Renamo combatants is not only compromising deadlines but also the financial situation of the already demobilised ‘guerrillas’, Carta de Mozambique reports.
‘Carta’ has found out that former Renamo guerrillas in Sofala, Manica and Inhambane provinces have not received subsidies for three months.
Renamo President Ossufo Momade says the situation is of concern not only to the demobilized, but also his party, the government and the international community.
Speaking to journalists in Beira, capital of Sofala province, Momade said that the situation would be rectified within the next few days, the government having already received the funds from partners.
President Nyusi last Friday promised the DDR process in Tete province would resume in June. The president acknowledged that the process was interrupted because of financial problems, which had put it in a ‘bain Marie’ after its official start in July, 2019.
So far, the DDR process has covered 2,307 ex-Renamo guerrillas, out of an estimated 5,221 in total, of whom 62 are said to have deserted from the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta.
Ten Renamo bases have already been dismantled.
Regarding the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta, to which responsibility for the attacks in Sofala and Manica provinces is attributed, Momade says he has not yet established contact with its leader, Mariano Nhongo.
