The city of Beira didn’t sleep last night, as Daviz Simango’s body arrived home to an emotional reception, with chants and drums .
Beira International Airport registered unprecedented crowds, with hundreds of residents congregating to receive the urn containing the remains of the man who lost his life while serving his fourth consecutive term as mayor. His brother Lutero Simango and eldest son Uria accompanied the body.
At the airport were members of the Simango family and of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the party he founded. They were joined by members of the provincial government, representatives of various political parties and faiths, community leaders and anonymous citizens, all united around the figure of Daviz Simango.
The remains of Daviz Mbepo Simango will be buried in Santa Isabel cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday – an official funeral, by resolution by the Council of Ministers.
Daviz Simango died at the age of 57 on February 22 in South Africa, to where he had been evacuated for emergency medical treatment.
