The president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), Daviz Simango, has declared himself a candidate for the 2019 presidential election.
Simango was selected by the MDM’s 82-member National Council at the party congress, which ends in Nampula today.
Meeting spokesman Sande Carmona said Simango’s selection as MDM candidate for the Ponta Vermelha in 2019 was expected.
To be selected, Simango had to be re-elected president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique by secret ballot of the delegates, thereby becoming default candidate for the presidential elections.
This is the third time that Simango, who is also president of Beira municipal council, has been the MDM candidate for the presidency, running previously in both the 2009 and 2014 elections.
Simango is a member of the State Council, the presidency consultative body.
