Hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Sofala provincial government building early this morning, armed with photocopies of their identity cards and disregarding every rule of social distance.
Participants told ‘O País’ that they had been informed yesterday, through social networks, that they should bring their identity cards to the governor’s office in order to benefit from a 15,500.00 meticais support grant for victims of Cyclone Idai, which hit the city in March last year.
Shortly after the cyclone passed, the provincial government registered around 70,000 people across Sofala province as eligible for support.
Last Monday, 18 months later, the amounts finally began to be distributed to beneficiaries. Crowds built up at the schools where the process was taking place, and the National Institute of Social Assistance (INAS), responsible for distributing the grants, decided to cancel the process to avoid Covid-19 contamination, outraging beneficiaries and causing today’s crowd.
Hundreds of people have been waiting in front of the government building for guidance since as early as 6:00 a.m., but there has so far been no announcement from the authorities, and police have urging residents to stay calm.
