The death toll in Mozambique from Cyclone Idai and the floods that followed has risen to 598, authorities have said today.
The latest assessment, presented by the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC), adds 80 more casualties since Monday. According to INGC, the number of injured remains 1,641.
Cyclone Idai hit the central region of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe on March 14.
The number of people affected in Mozambique rose from 843,723 to 967,014, corresponding to 195,287 families.
The number of families receiving humanitarian aid increased from 29,291 to 32,290.
There are 131,136 people in the 136 accommodation centres in operation 7,442 of whom are considered vulnerable.
The group of people affected includes all those who have lost their homes, or need food or some other form of assistance.
The authorities also adjusted the number of houses totally destroyed to 62,153 (from 59,910), 34,139 partially destroyed (up from 33,925) and 15,784 flooded (mostly makeshift housing).
According to the INGC, Cyclone Idai also damaged 3,344 classrooms , affecting 150,854 students.
The resources allocated for aid and rescue are 945 humanitarian specialists, 22 helicopters, 42 boats, 25 airplanes, three frigates, 15 trucks, 30 satellite phones and 17 drones.
