Mozambique: Proposal of measures to mitigate impact of violent demonstrations - Notícias

Mozambique customs in the Massaca district of Maputo province last Friday seized two vehicles carrying 372 cartons of smuggled whiskey.
Spokesman for the Mozambique Tax Authority Haydn Castelo David, told Notícias that the drivers of a Toyota Granvia and a Nissan Atlas, the latter with a foreign registration plate, realised they had been spotted by Customs personnel. “The drivers then attempted to escape by diverting towards Massaca, but they did not manage to get away and were intercepted in the Massaca sandpits after a long chase.”
The whiskey was valued at about 600,000 meticais retail, with customs duties and other dues estimated at about 900,000 meticais.
David appealed to importers tempted to try smuggling to rather head to the Customs office and pay what they owe so that they do not harm competitors who declare their goods and comply with the regulations, and carry out their commercial activities within the law.
As a result of the seizure, a tax charge is being opened and forwarded to the Customs Court for legal proceedings.
“According to the law, if the owners do not comply with their tax obligations by the deadline, the goods will be sold at auction,” David said.
