Mozambican customs seized more than 3,000 mobile phones from China on Thursday night at the air cargo terminal of Maputo International Airport on the grounds of falsification of their quantity and of the amount of tax due on them.
The number declared to the authorities was only 1,700 and import duties due only 200,000 meticais, but the actual number was 3,400, on which 1.5 million meticais in customs tax would have been payable.
Having seized the merchandise, the authorities said that criminal proceedings would be instituted and that the accused would have an opportunity to explain himself.
Thirty-four seizures of goods have been registered at Maputo International Airport so far this year.
