Three containers, each containing 250 bundles of second-hand clothing, were seized by the Mozambique Customs this week in the port of Beira, the provincial capital of Sofala.
According to customs authorities in Beira, the merchandise, whose owner has not yet been located, was imported from France and declared as being destined for neighbouring Malawi, but one of the trucks leaving the port was later found unloading the merchandise in Beira.
At the time of going to press, the other two containers were still in the Port of Beira and had been confiscated as being included in the same false customs declaration.
According to Mozambique Customs, the fraud, if successful, would have cost the Mozambican state just over 2,500,000 meticais [around US$41,428 at current exchange rates].
