Mozambique: Private parking lots in Maputo have nine days to legalize

Mozambique Customs have shut down a drinks factory operating in an old timber yard in Beira, Mozambique’s second-largest city.
Following a tip-off, customs visited the site in Beira’s Inhamizua neighbourhood and found a soft beverage and liquor factory with hygiene conditions far below the standards required for the processing of food and beverages.
“We are not experts in this matter, but it was obvious. We also note that the factory was operating clandestinely and did not comply with its tax obligations, including the payment of the special consumption tax on alcoholic beverages. The factory has a license authorising the production of drinks, but it does not specify what kind of drinks. We will investigate under what regime this factory was allowed to operate in the coming days,” a customs representative said.
Customs sealed the premises and seized all the equipment and products used in the production of beverages. At this point, they are treating the matter as a tax offence and subsequent steps will be taken by the fiscal court.
The supposed owners of the facility fled when they saw customs officers approaching. According to authorities, the property is registered in the name of a Chinese national.
