Cuba joined the commemoration of 50 years of independence in Mozambique with a ceremony at the headquarters of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), the first of different events held in this city to celebrate the date.
ICAP president Fernando González Llort highlighted the relations between the African nation and the Caribbean island, describing them as “built on the ideals of two giants of our history: Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and President Samora Machel”.
He emphasized that the path to Mozambican freedom was forged with sacrifice, blood, and resilience under the leadership of Eduardo Mondlane (1920-1969), Samora Machel (1933-1986), and other courageous fighters of the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO).
“FRELIMO united an oppressed people in the epic struggle against Portuguese colonialism, and the victory of June 25, 1975 marked the beginning of another battle: the reconstruction of a free and independent nation”, he asserted.
González Llort also expressed his gratitude for Mozambique’s solidarity with Cuba against the U.S. blockade and pointed out that the island is proud to have its health professional providing their services in different regions of Mozambique.
He concluded his remarks with an exhortation to join the ongoing campaign “ICAP: 65 Years of Love for Cuba”, which evokes the birth of this institution conceived by Fidel Castro to promote solidarity, cooperation, peace, and respect for sovereignty.
Januario Sumbane, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mozambican embassy, praised the unbreakable friendship between the two countries and referred to June 25, 1975 as the beginning of a new era in which the people became masters of their destiny.
After independence, Presidents Fidel Castro and Samora Machel fostered relations of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation that continue fruitfully to this day, he noted.
