Two thousand five hundred tourists of different nationalities will visit the city of Ilha de Moçambique in Nampula province on the 25th of this month, when a modern cruise ship anchors at the recently restored pier.
In coordination with local tour operators, the municipality is preparing a gastronomic treat for the visitors which will see the city’s main roads transformed into a giant dining room.
Explains Ilha de Moçambique’s mayor Saíde Abduremane to newspaper Noticias: “The main streets of the city, which have been recent rehabilitated, will be closed to motor traffic and spread with tables that will showcase the cuisine of Ilha de Moçambique.”
The cruise ship, one of the most modern in the world, should anchor off the Ilha de Moçambique at about 5 o’clock in the morning of 25 December, after visiting various South African destinations. The tourists will disembark for a 16-hour visit before setting sail again at 10.00pm.
The city’s mayor says the demand for accommodation in the city over Christmas is high. The oldest city in the country, Ilha de Moçambique has a well-trodden tourist trail including views and historic buildings, craft and clothing markets and a good supply of antiques.
