As the new coronavirus spreads to neighbouring countries, Mozambique is intensifying screening for the disease at its borders. Meanwhile, South Africa has partially closed its own borders.
The coronavirus is spreading across African countries quickly. In South Africa, confirmed cases have doubled in the past few days, reaching 62 on Monday.
In Mozambique, a climate of fear has led to the intensification of screening at national borders, Miarmar reports. Such is the case at Ressano Garcia, where no one crossing into Mozambique escapes screening.
Communities close to the borders are more exposed than most, and the fear is palpable. Lúcia, who lives close to the border and runs a small business, is careful to wear a mask when interacting with people.
The World Health Organisation had registered about 11,000 new confirmed cases by last Sunday, bringing the total to more than 150,000 world-wide.
