Cross-border crime syndicates are terrorising communities living on the KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique border.
Organised gangs are targeting 4×4 vehicles, but recently they have also started stealing household items.
Over 65 vehicles have been stolen in recent months.
The area is a thriving rural agricultural area that is also known for their scenic beauty, which attracts tourists all year round, but over the past few months it’s become a hunting ground for criminals.
The gangs target mostly 4×4 vehicles and hold their victims hostage after breaking into their homes then flee with their vehicles.
It’s believed the criminals use back roads to avoid detection. The vehicles are eventually smuggled into Mozambique.
Terrified residents say the gangs are becoming more aggressive and violent. One of the latest victims an elderly woman, was left dead.
The surge in crime is hurting the few business opportunities available in the area.
Residents are pleading for government and police to intervene.
