A gang attacked a miner in Mogovolas on Tuesday and robbed him of about 1.5 million meticais in cash and 813 grams of gold..
The crime took place in Mogovolas district in the northern province of Nampula, where the individuals broke down the victim’s door, assaulted him, and ran off with the money and gold. Police in Nampula did not reveal the identity of the victim
Speaking to reporters, Nampula provincial police command Zacarias Nacute said two of the gang had been arrested and some of the money recovered, but that the gold was still missing.
“Efficient police work resulted in the arrest of two gang members and the recovery of about 1.2 million meticais, and investigations are underway to apprehend the rest of the gang and recovery the missing gold,” Nacute said.
Nacute said Nampula police last week opened eight criminal theft cases, of which it has solved seven. Police recovered 15 stolen televisions, a car, two motorcycles and a computer, of which some have been returned to their rightful owners.
In the same period, the province recorded five accidents, of which four took place on the province’s roads and the fifth on the railway. The road accidents resulted in four deaths and as many injured, while the 14-year-old boy involved in the railway accident lost an arm.
