The Mozambican police have detained four criminals who passed themselves off as members of the armed forces when they attacked homes in Dondo municipality, in the central province of Sofala.
According to a report carried by the independent television station STV, the gang, wearing military uniforms, raided a house on Friday and threatened the family living there with bush knives.
They demanded money, and one of the family members told STV “since we didn’t have any money, they took everything in the house, and all our poultry such as chickens and ducks. They tied us all up and gagged us, including children aged eight and nine, and an 80 year old woman”.
They also threatened to rape the women, but one of the gang said he persuaded the others not to inflict this additional brutality on their victims.

Once in police custody, the leader of the group said they had obtained three military uniforms from one of his relatives, now deceased, who had once been a soldier in the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM).
If this story is true, and one dead soldier had three pairs of uniform, it is an alarming sign of how little control the FADM has over military equipment.
The police say that three of the four gang members have been arrested for burglary in the past. Indeed one of them was only released a week ago after serving a six month sentence for burglary.
