Portugal: TV ombudsman receives 1,000 complaints about Communist party interview

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is the winner of this year’s José Aparecido da Oliveira award, presented by the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), the organisation’s executive secretary told Lusa on Friday.
According to ambassador Francisco Ribeiro Telles, “President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was chosen by consensus” among the members of the jury, the ambassadors of the nine CPLP member states.
“We are very pleased with this decision, by consensus, of the member states,” he added.
The diplomat said that the date and place in which Portugal’s President could receive the prize, worth 30,000 euros, has not yet been set, but saidit could be at a ceremony on the sidelines of the next conference of heads of state and government of the CPLP, scheduled for July in Luanda.
Created in 2011, the José Aparecido de Oliveira award aims to honour personalities and institutions that distinguish themselves in the defence, enhancement and promotion of the Lusophone community.
The first recipient, in 2012, was former Brazilian head of state Lula da Silva, but the list of recipients also includes former East Timor President Xanana Gusmão and the Timorese Catholic Church; former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio; United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres; Brazil’s first ambassador to the CPLP, Lauro Moreira, and the African Union’s high representative for partnerships with Europe, Carlos Lopes.
José Aparecido de Oliveira was a Brazilian politician and former Minister of Culture of Brazil, considered one of the main advocates of the creation of the CPLP.
This year’s nominees for the award included, in addition to the Portuguese President, former executive secretaries of the CPLP.
Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor are members of the CPLP.
