The executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese-language Countries (CPLP) said on Wednesday that members of the organisation were fully “aware” of the armed violence in northern Mozambique, and warned of humanitarian issues.
“The member states are fully aware of the situation in Cabo Delgado,” Zacarias da Costa said, noting that he now had a “fuller perspective” on the armed violence after meeting with Mozambique’s head of state, Filipe Nyusi, which took place today at the Presidency in Maputo.
“I am sure that the member states will look at the situation in Cabo Delgado in order to put efforts on this issue that is also of the CPLP and all of us,” he said.
The CPLP executive secretary also spoke of the need to look together at the humanitarian issue in northern Mozambique, as well as the needs in terms of infrastructure in that province.
Zacarias da Costa arrived in Mozambique on Monday for a visit that lasts until Saturday, with several events on the agenda, including the VII International Congress on Environmental Education of the CPLP countries and Galicia and the Global Event on Human Rights in the community, which began on Tuesday and runs until Thursday in Maputo.
Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency for five years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021 with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged south of the region and in neighbouring Nampula province.
The conflict has left one million people displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and about 4,000 dead, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.
