The executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese-Language Countries (CPLP) told Lusa on Tuesday that the date of 17 July 2021 is under consideration for the organisation’s next summit of heads of state and government, which is to take place in Luanda.
“This is the day on which the CPLP celebrates its 25th anniversary,” Francisco Ribeiro Telles, the career diplomat from Portugal who currently oversees the CPLP’s business, said of 17 July, which he said “is the day that is being discussed amongst member states.”
The summit, which is held every two years, usually in July, was to have taken place this year, but was postpone until next summer at the request of the host country, Angola.
So far no specific date had been set for what is the CPLP’s most important meeting and at which Cabo Verde’s stint holding the rotating presidency of the organisation is to come to an end, with Angola taking over for two years.
CaboVerde’s foreign minister had already announced that the country would continue with the presidency until 2021, at Angola’s suggestion.
Initially Angola had sought a postponement of the summit date to September of this year, but later decided to request a further postponement until July next year.
The CPLP’s other member states are Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor.
