The executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese-Langauge Countries (CPLP) met on Monday with Mozambique’s foreign minister as part of the global event on human rights in the community, which begins on Wednesday in Maputo.
Zacarias da Costa arrived in Mozambique yesterday for a visit that will run until Saturday, and will take part in the discussion on human rights.
The conference called “Global Event on Human Rights in the CPLP” will take place Wednesday and Thursday in Maputo.
The event aims to promote reporting, implementation and follow-up of recommendations of human rights mechanisms, as well as to “identify common challenges and help define the ways forward”.
“This event constitutes an opportunity for the member states of the community to share information, knowledge and best practices on engaging with the mechanisms of the UN [United Nations] human rights bodies,” a statement from Mozambique’s ministry of foreign affairs said.
Mozambique’s minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Verónica Macamo, stressed the importance of economic cooperation between member countries, during the meeting with the executive secretary of the CPLP.
“It is a moment for us to take the opportunity to exchange views and impressions on how to improve our cooperation, and how to leverage the various areas, particularly the economic one,” Verónica Macamo stressed.
The conference on human rights will bring together, among others, representatives of the CPLP, the Mozambican Ministry of Justice and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
