The Angolan minister of economy and planning said on Friday that the CPLP countries, which are not neighbours, have to promote economic cooperation in a different way, making each country a revolving platform for the others.
Mário Caetano João, was speaking on the sidelines of the 1st joint meeting of economy, trade and finance ministers of the Community of Portuguese-Language countries (“CPLP”), representing the Angolan government, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Lusophone organisation.
The ministers are due to focus their debate on “Economic Cooperation in the CPLP: priorities and challenges,” and are expected to approve a Strategic Agenda for Economic Cooperation in the CPLP in the 2022-2027 five-year period.
The minister noted that Angola, “wanted to give more strength to the issue of economic cooperation,” based on local business, taking into consideration that the CPLP is different from other regional communities, as the countries that are part of it have no common borders.
“We have to have a variable geometry to see how this economic cooperation is going to happen and this is the theme of our meeting, in which we are going to propose a strategic agenda,” he said.
“As the countries are not neighbouring they have to seek to take advantage in a different way and make it so that each country can serve as a revolving platform for the other CPLP countries,” he suggested.
The minister said that, “Angola, for example, wanting to expand to West Africa, can count on a revolving platform via Guinea-Bissau and vice-versa, or can also reach Portugal, Brazil,” amongst others.
“Basically it is about finding mechanisms for solid and mutually advantageous economic cooperation,” he added.
The strategic agenda will be based on several axes, from promotion of foreign trade of the CPLP countries, greater attraction of foreign direct investment, funding instruments, capacity building, amongst other initiatives, he said.
Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste are the nine member states of the CPLP.
