Brazil’s minister of justice and public security has called for measures to facilitate the movement of citizens within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), as well as stressing the importance of harmonising official documents and fighting organised crime.
“We reaffirmed some commitments and our commitment to deepen them, especially in the area of mobility to facilitate the exchange and mobility of people between our countries,” said Ricardo Lewandowski in statements to journalists at the end of a visit to the CPLP headquarters in Lisbon on Thursday.
“A second point to which we are giving special emphasis, and which was the subject of discussions, is the reliability of the official and private documents of the different countries, which in our view not only facilitates political, cultural and institutional exchange, but above all also economic exchange, insofar as, with reliable documents from the different countries, recognised by them, economic flows develop more easily, firmly and vigorously,” added the Brazilian minister.
The third point, he continued, “is cooperation in the fight against organised crime, which is no longer national, but transnational.”
On this point, Ricardo Lewandowski emphasised that Brazil wants to “advance in the exchange of information to combat trafficking in drugs, arms and people, money laundering and other related crimes.”
The minister also referred to the growth of organised crime worldwide, stating that “all countries face organised crime” in emphasising the importance of collaboration between the authorities in Brazil and Portugal in this area “but also in the area of drug trafficking” – where the two countries are used “as a corridor, not as producers.”
The minister has been in Portugal since last weekend, having already had meetings with Portugal’s minister of justice, Rita Júdice, and the minister of internal administration, Margarida Blasco, as well as going to Coimbra on Wednesday to take part in a seminar.
